The Croatian capital Zagreb is a city with centuries-old tradition. It grew at the crossroads of many routes and has always been deeply rooted in Central European tradition, with sights and atmosphere that will remind one of other European capitals like Prague, Vienna or Budapest.
In the 11th century the first palaces, together with the first church were built on the hill forming the small town of Kaptol, and on the neighboring hill already grew civilian part of Zagreb called Gradec. As the time passed, two settlements joined together to create a city of Zagreb.
The wild Tatar horsemen from Asia broke into Zagreb in 1242 and burned it to the ground. After they left the city was rebuilt with strong fortification towers and thick walls. King Bela IV proclaimed Zagreb a free royal town, granting it privileges that would enable further development. The original document, Zlatna bula, is the most renowned document in the whole of the Zagreb’s history.

While in Zagreb, take a ride on probably the shortest funicular in the world: 66
meters long Zagreb funicular. Built in 1890, it was the first mean of public
transportation in Zagreb the oldest one that is still in use. Zagreb funicular is
an operating museum exhibit and one of the most popular symbols of the city.
Zagreb has one of the most peculiar museums in the world: Museum of broken
relationships, a place dedicated to the demise of love affairs. While in Zagreb,
make sure to visit the museum - maybe you’ll fall in love with it’s charming
oddness.
Zagreb continued its fast growth through the following centuries descending to the areas below the two historic hills. In 1880 it was hit by the great earthquake that made a serious damage to the Cathedral and many other buildings. The city was rebuilt following the vision of renown Austrian architect Herman Bolle.
